Lexus tops United States poll for dependability again

Consultancy J.D. Power's closely-watched 2018 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study, put Toyota ninth overall and its Lexus luxury vehicle division first in the survey of owners of three-year old cars. Overall vehicle dependability improves 9% from 2017, the first time the industry score has improved since 2013. The study focuses on 177 specific problems and a lower score indicates a higher quality rating. J.D. Power says customers complain most frequently about problems with voice recognition technology and Bluetooth connectivity.

"Strong dependability scores not only improve demand for used vehicles, but also are a contributor to higher residual values", Jonathan Banks, Vice President of Vehicle Analysis and Analytics at J.D. Power said. Overall dependability is determined by the number of problems experienced per 100 vehicles (PP100).

Lexus topped the survey for the seventh consecutive year.

Although still well below the industry average of 142 PP100, Fiat showed the biggest improvement of any automaker in this year's study, with the company seeing 106 fewer PP100 than last year (now at 192 PP100). The study was fielded in October-December 2017.

Buick ranks highest in overall vehicle dependability among Mass Market brands with a score of 116 PP100. Kia, Dodge (166 PP100) and Nissan (133 PP100) had their best finishes ever in the study.

Toyota Motor Corp. models take home six of the 19 segment awards in this year's study-the most for an individual automaker. That included the Prius, the top-ranked Compact Car, and its Tacoma, the leading Midsize Pickup. The study aims to measure the long-term quality of vehicles, including new technologies and features now available to buyers. Porsche, Buick, Infiniti, and Kia rounded out the top-five.

The Dodge Challenger, Ford Super Duty, Ford Expedition, Honda Odyssey, Hyundai Tucson, Mercedes-Benz GLK-Class, and Audi Q3 also were singled out for segment awards.
