Kim Jong Un invites South Korean president for talks in the North

Some were holding up a ripped-up "Korean Unification" flag, which was used when athletes from South and North Korea made a joint entrance at the opening ceremony of the PyeongChang Olympics on Friday night.

On a flight back to the USA from the winter Olympics in South Korea, Mr. Pence told reporters that his meetings with South Korean President Moon Jae-in and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe reaffirmed that the allies still "stand together" against North Korea's nuclear and ballistic missile programs. "If you meet Chairman Kim Jong-un and exchange views on many issues, the North-South relationship may quickly improve", Kim Yo-jong added according to a presidential official cited by local news agency Yonhap.

Moon did not immediately accept the invitation but said he hopes the "right conditions" will be created so it can go ahead.

'Having these red communists in the heart of Seoul is an utter humilation!' one protester shouted near the venue as dozens of others waved banners condemning both Moon and Kim Jong Un.

North Korea on Saturday proposed an inter-Korean summit to be held in Pyongyang and invited South Korean President Moon Jae-in for the same.

President Trump has traded insults with North Korea's leader and has led efforts to slap sanctions on the country for its refusal to yield to worldwide pressure to halt its nuclear weapons program.

The two North Korean leaders arrived in the early afternoon on a private jet that landed at Incheon International Airport, near Seoul.

The show was the final set-piece element of the North Korean delegation's landmark visit, the diplomatic highlight of the Olympics-driven rapprochement between the two halves of the peninsula, before the North Koreans flew home.

In January, South Korea's decision to allow the North's teams to compete in this year's Olympic games in Pyeongchang was a historic step toward diplomacy.

The spokesman said Mr Moon also called for a quick resumption of dialogue between the United States and North Korea.

While a summit in Pyongyang would signal warming ties on the peninsula, it also risks driving a wedge in the alliance between the USA and South Korea.

The powerful Kim sister also attended Friday's opening ceremony, but before the hockey match there were none of the flag-burning protests against the North's Olympic presence that had marked the previous few days.

US Vice President Mike Pence, who was seated next to Moon, stared ahead as the ceremony unfolded.
