These officials said that while Pence did not greet Kim Yong Nam, he didn't deliberately skip over him.

Kate Yoo, 21, said she doesn't think it's "the best thing to have her here, although maybe part of having one of the Kim dynasty over is like a safeguard, then they won't attack".

The spokesman said Moon also called for a quick resumption of dialogue between the United States and North Korea.

Not everybody was so taken by the show of Korean unity, with U.S. Vice President Mike Pence remaining seated as the North and South Koreans entered the stadium. Athletes from the two countries marched side by side during the opening ceremony and have formed a joint women's hockey team.

At a Friday VIP reception for delegation leaders, Pence arrived late and stayed for just five minutes - and did not interact with the delegation from the North.

The North Korean leader's sister, Kim Yo Jong, who is in the south visiting the Winter Olympic Games, delivered the message during the rare lunch at Seoul's presidential palace. They were also served North Korean-style fermented fish and white "kimchi" or fermented cabbage.

A senior United States administration official told reporters that Pence did not discuss North Korea's invitation to Moon when the two leaders watched short track speed skating together. "We tried to sneak into the media section so we could wave to the athletes", Howard said on Saturday.

President Donald Trump and the North's leader Kim Jong Un have engaged in a series of personal insults. Because of the time difference between the United States and South Korea, the Opening Ceremony will air in primetime, 15 hours after the event actually took place.

In the stands meanwhile, Swiss president Alain Berset followed the game with top politicians from the North Korean regime.

Speaking to the Washington Post aboard Air Force Two on his way home from the Games, Pence said Washington would keep up its "maximum pressure campaign" against Pyongyang but would be open to possible talks at the same time.

"The North was still welcomed with open arms to what South Korean President Moon Jae-in called 'Olympic games of peace, '" the publication said, "and the USA appeared to be the one left out in the cold".

"The vice present cheered for the team he's rooting for". Meanwhile a joint hockey team and a cheerleading squad has generated warm feelings, at least at the Olympics. "He's biased for the Americans". He wants them all to win medals.
