Kim Jong-un asks South Korean chief to Pyongyang summit

The meeting could be a prelude to a summit between leaders from the two countries, and Moon has already said he is willing to travel to Pyongyang to meet Kim Jong-un.

At the the Olympics' opening ceremony on Friday night, Kim Yo Jong sat behind Moon (and Pence) - but Saturday night, she and Kim Yong Nam sat next to Moon and IOC President Thomas Bach as they watched the unified Korean women's hockey team play their historic first game.

Any summit between the two still-officially warring Koreas would be a coup for Moon, who has been pushing for a diplomatic solution to the standoff over North Korea's nuclear and missile programmes.

Relations between the two Koreas have improved in recent weeks, with Pyongyang agreeing to send its highest ranking delegation ever to attend the Winter Olympic Games, being held in the South Korean resort of Pyeongchang. The parties have also reiterated their desire to boost cooperation and dialogue between Pyongyang and Seoul.

The official added that Pence is confident that the United States, South Korea and Japan alliance will continue to be strong regardless of inter-Korean talks around the Olympics and whether or not they continue after the games.

South Koreans angry at North Korea's perceived "hijacking" of the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics have sarcastically dubbed it the "Pyongyang Games", but it seems many really are struggling to differentiate between the two places.

North and South Korea are technically still at war after their 1950-53 conflict ended in a truce rather than a peace treaty.

During their meeting President Moon was pictured smiling and shaking hands with Kim Yo Jong.

Moon joined Kim Yo Jong and other North Korean supporters Saturday in cheering for the team against Switzerland.

As a way to support North Korean believers and to understand their hardship, pain and courage, Open Doors has asked Christians to live like a North Korean with their Lent resource of the same name.

The invitation came during talks and a lunch Moon hosted with Kim at the presidential Blue House in Seoul.

However, Politico suggested that Warmbier's presence - on the invitation of Pence - was similar to former President Barack Obama taking openly gay athletes Billie Jean King and Caitlin Cahow to Sochi, Russia, in 2014.

North and South Korea competed together for the first time at an Olympics on Saturday as the first of 102 gold medals were decided against a fast-moving backdrop of diplomatic manoeuvring.

"These actions cannot replicate the reality of our dear brothers and sisters, but with prayerful reflection they can provide a window into the world of a North Korean Christian".

"We should firmly keep in mind any talks where denuclearisation is not a precondition only buy North Korea more time to complete its nuclear capabilities while they fool us with their peace offensive façade", said Chang Je-won, spokesman for the Liberty Korea Party.

Turns out it wasn't a secret plan for the newly unified Korean women's hockey team to beat Switzerland.

However, the result mattered less than the political symbolism as around 200 of North Korea's famed "army of beauties" charmed a crowd of 3,600 besotted locals with nostalgic oldies - and even broke out a Mexican wave.

Along with the rest of the North's senior delegation, Kim is to have lunch with Moon in Seoul.
