Indian PM Modi in Abu Dhabi for two-day state visit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi Saturday met Mahmoud Abbas on a historic visit to Palestine during which the Palestinian President sought India's support for a multi-country mechanism to achieve a "just and desired peace" with Israel in accordance with the two-state solution. Modi assured President Abbas that India is committed to the Palestinian people's interests.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi yesterday pledged $40mn for economic development in the Palestinian territories, marking the first-ever visit by an Indian premier to the West Bank.

PM Modi's first visit to Palestine underlined India's independent relations with the two warring states in the region.

The PM arrived to a red carpet welcome embellished by the Palestine National Authority conferring on him the "Grand Collar Honour", the highest recognition offered by the PA.

Dubai's iconic Burj Khalifa will light up in the colours of the Indian flag tonight, according to Emaar.

Trump in December shocked the Palestinians by breaking with decades of USA policy and recognising Occupied al-Quds as Israel's capital. "The relations between India and Palestine have stood the test of time".

Palestinian news agency WAFA reported that the two parties signed agreements worth $41.35 million to fund multiple Palestinian projects.

India recognized the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) early on, and in the 1980s it also recognized the "State of Palestine".

The agreements include building a hospital in Beit Sahour, near Bethlehem, at the cost of $29 million and the construction of an India Palestine Center for empowering women at a cost $5 million. Since the visits, bilateral investments between UAE and India have witnessed an increase.

In early January India backed a United Nations resolution condemning US President Donald Trump's recognition of Jerusalem as capital of the Jewish state.

The hype around India's strategic ties with Israel and the bonhomie around Modi's visit to Israel and its Prime Minister's visit to India also do not seem to perturb the Palestinians. The people of Palestine have shown remarkable courage in the face of several challenges.
