Human eggs fully grown in lab for first time ever

Human eggs fully grown in lab for first time ever

While the feat has previously been achieved for mouse eggs, and has given rise to live young after fertilisation, the process has proved tricky in humans.

While the breakthrough is huge news for people who might be struggling to start a family, experts in the field have called for caution. "We also hope to find out, subject to legal regulation, whether they can be fertilized", said Evelyn Telfer, a professor at the University of Edinburgh's Faculty of Biological Sciences.

If success and safety rates were improved, he said, it could in future help cancer patients wishing to preserve their fertility while undergoing chemotherapy treatment, improve fertility treatments, and deepen scientific understanding of the biology of the earliest stages of human life.

A technique developed by researchers in NY and Edinburgh may change that.

According to the Guardian, researchers at the University of Edinburgh discovered that it is possible to grow human eggs outside of the human body in a lab.

Scientists have grown human eggs in a laboratory in an experiment which heralds a world where women are no longer needed to make babies.

The eggs were grown to the point at which they could be fertilised.

The technique holds promise specifically for women who have to go through sterilising treatments such as chemotherapy. "With this [new] procedure, you could potentially get thousands or hundreds of eggs".

He said: 'This study demonstrates that there is much laboratory research to be undertaken before we can be encouraged to believe that we will achieve healthy normal eggs for clinical purposes in vitro developed follicles derived from human ovarian cortical tissue'.

However, it will be many years before the research leads to new fertility preservation treatments.

Publishing their result in the journal Molecular Human Reproduction on Friday, scientists from Britain and the USA said it could one day help in developing regenerative medicine therapies and new infertility treatments.

Further, researchers want to know how healthy these eggs are and whether they can be successfully used for fertilization.

The scientists are now working on testing whether the eggs can be fertilized and produce healthy embryos.
