Ex-wife of former aide: White House reaction to abuse allegations 'troubling'

Trump made no mention of the women or the abuse allegations when he spoke about Porter at the White House on Friday.

The vice president's comments come as chief of staff John Kelly and other top White House officials are facing questions about why they did not act to remove Porter from his position after they found out about the allegations of domestic abuse.

According to a White House official, Sorensen's job with the Council on Environmental Quality did not require a security clearance, but his background check was ongoing.

Corbett told the Post that Sorensen had run over her foot with a vehicle, put out a cigarette on her hand, and had thrown her into a wall. The Washington Post first reported details of the meeting.

"Before we were contacted by the media, we learned last night that there were allegations". He alleged she hit him with a flurry of punches on three occasions in a single day because he had asked if she would mind if he went to the gym before breakfast.

'So you'll have to talk to him about that.

The president's remarks came on a morning when Porter's second wife appeared on NBC's "Today Show", detailing physical abuse, and saying she gave a full accounting months ago to Federal Bureau of Investigation agents. I think he shouldn't have settled; personally I think he shouldn't have settled.

CNN was unable to reach Corbett for comment.

Others in the White House told the newspaper that Kelly - who was installed in his current post in July to help bring order and stability to the White House - had known of the complaints since October. "We immediately confronted the staffer, he denied the allegations and he resigned today".

"A lot of us could have done better", deputy press secretary Raj Shah told reporters when asked about the situation - a rare statement of contrition from the Trump White House.

The administration's number two weighed in from South Korea on the controversy that has engulfed the White House this week, after allegations from Porter's two ex-wives led to his resignation. Over the past six months, Porter saw his role in the White House dramatically elevated from behind-the-scenes functionary to one of Trump's chief gatekeepers.

Porter resigned abruptly this week when the allegations of spousal abuse were made public, initially by the Daily Mail.

Willoughby was married to Porter, who has resigned from his post because of the allegations, from 2009 to 2013. "Domestic violence is abhorrent and has no place in our society". Shah also repeatedly declined to get into specifics about how much the White House knew past year about the allegations against Porter.

In an interview with CNN, Porter's ex-wife Jennifer Willoughby detailed allegations of abuse, saying that during her marriage she lived under a "low-grade constant terror of not knowing what I might do to set something off".

"I don't think that he has really taken the time to deconstruct why it is that he behaves this way, and until he is able to do that, I don't know that he has control over it", she told Cooper. Trump was not consulted when Hicks and several other aides drafted a White House statement defending Porter, and he was under the impression that Hicks had let her relationship with Porter cloud her judgment, a source familiar with the matter said.

'I was surprised by it.

"We wish him well", Trump told reporters during a hastily arranged photo opportunity in the Oval Office.
