DPRK high-level delegation heads home after ROK visit

After his staged walk-out at an American football game in October, on Friday it was the turn of US ally, South Korea, to feel the brunt of his pointed political point-scoring. "S. Korea stands shoulder-to-shoulder with the U.S & our allies".

The trip by Kim Yo Jong is the latest move in an extraordinary show of Olympic diplomacy with Seoul that could prove to be a major challenge to the Trump administration's hard-line Korea policies. "Moon should be aware that he has to urge denuclearisation to North Korea by himself, not depending on dialogue between the USA and North Korea", the Yomiuri newspaper said in an editorial. Moon's chief of staff held a farewell dinner for the delegation before the delegation attended a performance by a North Korean orchestra, the last item on their itinerary before heading home.

It was the first time an inter-Korean team had competed at an Olympic Games.

The study drew a contrast with a 2017 survey conducted by the Korea Institute for National Unification, which found that 57.8 percent of South Koreans said unification said necessary, down from 62.1 percent in 2016 and 69.3 percent in 2014.

After a chaotic year of nuclear war threats and nuclear and missile tests from the North, the opening ceremony proved to be an evening of striking visual moments.

The visit included an invitation for South Korean President Moon Jae-in to travel to Pyongyang for talks.

Vice President Mike Pence is taking heat on social media for not standing for the North and South Korean teams marching together under a united flag during Friday's Olympics opening ceremony in Pyeongchang, South Korea.

"She (Kim Yo Jong) is not charming, she is a dictator's sister", Laila said."She is not looking after North Korean people". It has only deepened over the years as the North closes in on the ability to field an arsenal of nukes that can hit US cities.

On Saturday, the DPRK delegation paid a visit to Moon at the presidential Blue House.

However, South Korea's main opposition party warned that any talks between the two Koreas where the scrapping of North Korea's nuclear programme was not a precondition would only "benefit the enemy".

Mattis said it's unclear "if using the Olympics in a way to reduce tension - if that's going to have any traction once the Olympics are over".

"There is no daylight between the United States, the Republic of Korea and Japan on the need to continue to isolate North Korea economically and diplomatically until they abandon their nuclear and ballistic missile programme", Mr Pence told reporters during his return flight to Washington.

Just days into the 2018 Winter Olympics, it is clear that it will be remembered as much for political gymnastics as sporting prowess.
