Donald Trump gives shock to Israel on peace plan

On December 6, 2017, President Donald Trump announced his decision to recognise Jerusalem as Israel's capital and instructed the U.S. State Department to launch the process of moving the U.S. Embassy, now located in Tel Aviv, to Jerusalem.

"Right now the Palestinians aren't willing to make peace, they're not", Trump said when asked about the long-anticipated revelation of his administration's Middle East peace plan. And I am not necessarily sure that Israel is looking to make peace.

Gabriel also met Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in Ramallah, where he said there was no alternative to a Palestinian state alongside Israel and expressed reservations over Trump's recent moves. "They are not looking to make peace", Trump said in the interview with the right-wing paper.

The Palestinian envoy to the United Nations on February 8 suggested that China and Arab League could also be part of any future "peace process" on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. He said Jewish West Bank settlements "very much complicate" peacemaking.

Last month the United Nations expressed concern at a U.S. decision to withhold more than half of a tranche of funding for an agency that supports Palestinian refugees.

Last month multiple media outlets reported that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expected Trump's administration to move the US embassy into Jerusalem by the end of 2018.

Relations between the US President Donald Trump's administration and the PA have been strained since a December 6 announcement recognizing Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

Palestinians regard Jerusalem as the capital of their future state.

"I think what we are seeing here is not the end of the U.S. role as an honest broker because it never was an honest broker", she told Al Jazeera.

The comments come as the Palestinian leader is scheduled to visit Russia on Monday to hold talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Trump's ambassador to Israel, David Friedman, has in the past been a supporter of Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank.

"Russia and Putin can play an important role within the frame of an worldwide forum for peace", Abbas' diplomatic adviser, Majdi al-Khalidi said. Israel has annexed East Jerusalem and declared the entire city as its capital, a move never recognized by the worldwide community, and Abbas would like to strengthen his position behind Russian support.

Trump said he could understand why a number of other presidents who made moving the US Embassy to Jerusalem a campaign pledge, "bailed on their promise", because "I will tell you, the lobbying against it was tremendous".

Palestinian journalists often describe their work as a form of "resistance", as they believe their stories show the world the devastating effects of Israel's policies on Palestinians and provide Palestinians an outlet for their voices in a media climate that is often overshadowed by pro-Israeli narratives.

Palestinians, whose reaction was quite predictable, continue to reject the USA role in the peace process They stress that their official position remains unchanged and that they envisage the establishment of an independent state within the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as their capital.

One of the detainees is 17-year-old Mustafa al-Badn from the town of Tuqu' in the city of Bethlehem; he said Israeli forces raided his family home at 1:30 A.M., detained him and took him to Etzion prison.
