Troopers drove next to him and warned other drivers around him. Everyone wanted him to stop.

After several attempts, authorities stopped the SUV.

That's when FHP told Fellsmere police to try for a third time.

A stop stick, also called a spike strip, is a device used to slow or stop the movement of a vehicle by puncturing its tires.

Joseph Cooper, 28, told 911 dispatchers his 2003 BMW X5 was stuck traveling upwards of 100 miles per hour.

Dispatchers told him to put the auto in neutral, try the emergency brake and even try adjusting cruise control. "No, ma'am, I do not".

"We would be happy to work with the Florida State Police to investigate the cause of this incident", the manufacturer said, but cast doubt on Cooper's inability to stop. No matter what he tried, he said, he couldn't slow down.

911 operator: "I need you to try and turn on your cruise". As he reached Indian River County, law enforcement deployed stop sticks to blow his tires.

Not working, he said. "(Expletive), I'm about to hit somebody!"

The driver, Joseph Cooper, was alone in his SUV on I-95 near Vero Beach just before 1 p.m. when he lost control, he told emergency dispatchers.

"All BMW vehicles, including the 2003 X5 described in this incident, employ an electronic accelerator pedal which uses software logic to override the accelerator whenever the brake pedal is pressed while driving". But the driver was still unable to stop. The officials tossed out stop sticks again, blowing out the right two tires, which slowed the auto down to about 60 miles per hour, the highway patrol said.

As the drama unfolded, troopers from the Florida Highway Patrol were able to get ahead of the speeding BMW and clear traffic on the road. The auto started to swerve and then came to a stop on the inside lane-after about 40 miles.

No one was hit.

Cooper was taken to nearby hospital to be treated for chest pain before being brought to the Indian River County Sheriff's Office to wait for a ride, the paper reported.
