'Committed' Hamilton close to new Merc deal

Mercedes have unveiled the new vehicle Lewis Hamilton will drive in his bid to defend his Formula One title.

Hamilton revealed he has kept in regular contact with Mercedes boss Toto Wolff over the off-season and both key figures are relaxed about the ongoing contract negotiations.

Hamilton joined Mercedes on a three-year contract in 2013, and extended it in 2015, tying him to the marque through to the end of 2018.

Hamilton is looking to win his fourth world title in five years this season and is firm favourite to retain his crown.

Wolff added: "He's in good spirits, and in terms of our deal coming together, very good discussion, ticking the dots and expecting to come up with some news soon".

"The sooner the better it is". But the minute we put a date out, you're going to remember what that date is.

"It's important to cover every angle of the cooperation".

"A couple of weeks would be a realistic target".

Hamilton, while talking to Sky Sports F1 channel, also confirmed that the talks were positive, but reiterated his desire to complete negotiations before the start of the new season.

"During that time we spoke very often, we've constantly been talking to each other". And he knows that I know there's no-one else better, so we're comfortable and committed to each other.

"Hopefully we'll have something done before the new season, before we start the first race".

'I've not spoken to another team in six years and that shows how committed I am. I'll continue to stay while I have that fire in my belly.

'I love this job and I feel like I'm in the best shape I've ever been.

World champion Lewis Hamilton is expected to run in the auto later today.

"It doesn't make any sense to put ourselves under pressure", said Wolff.

Bottas' first run was a bust - the auto only got as far as the pit apron in front of the garage when it shut down and the technicians pushed it back into the garage, but some time later it was started again again and went out onto the circuit for a series of test laps.

"There's so much crap going on social media, what's big today has no relevance tomorrow".
