Climber dies after fall on Mount Hood, others stranded

All climbers are now off Mt. Hood.

Two climbers who were in the same party as the man who fell were guided down the mountain to a snow tractor, which took them to Timberline Lodge at 6,000ft (1,829m). The deceased climber was part of the second group.

The Clackamas County Sheriff's Office is reporting that two, possibly three, separate rescue operations are underway on Mount Hood this afternoon, Feb.13. She was brought down on a sled roped by rescuers, 600 feet at a time. The climber was lifted into the helicopter at 1:35 p.m. and flown to a Portland hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Authorities said that they will identify the deceased after positive identification and family notification.

Rescuers reached other stranded climbers and were attaching a line to help get them to safety, the sheriff's office said on Twitter just before 4:40 p.m. local time (7:40 p.m. ET).

"This isn't your backyard hill".

The call of a fallen climber was received at around 10:30 a.m., sheriff's Sgt. Brian Jensen said, and other climbers went to his aid.

"The quote was it was 'like a bowling alley,"' he said.

Russell Gubele of Mountain Wave Search and Rescue said Tuesday that he is unable to release information about the climber's condition.

"Both of them are upset".

Another round of rescuers reached the group just before 5 p.m. - ahead of a snowstorm that was predicted to slam the mountain overnight - and helped four climbers down. "We are trying to do everything we can to get everyone down safely before that weather hits us", Jensen said.

Climbers on the Hogsback Trail had signaled for help with emergency blankets while performing on the downed climber for nearly two hours, Frazier reports.

Mount Hood is a popular climbing site that has seen dozens of accidents and fatalities over the years. The sun has been out this week, and the temperature was well above freezing Tuesday at Timberline Lodge. One climber fell to his death.

Wyatt Peck, 26, said he tried scaling the mountain earlier on Tuesday but turned back because his pickaxe failed to grip the melting ice and snow.

"Conditions seem to be pretty icy, and that's partly due to the weather, the freeze melt cycles we've been having", said director Steve Guthrie.

Scott Lucas, head of search and rescue for the state emergency management agency, said that the man who fell couldn't stop his fall and fell to the Hogsback area.

"This is the worst climbing day I've experienced for sure, condition wise", Peck said.
