Chinese New Year has its own unique traditions

Chinese New Year celebrations are approaching, with next week's fair in Northbridge expected to be the centre of attention in Perth.

The western version of New Year, of course, takes place at midnight on December 31 and pretty much allows January 1 as a day for people to recover from the previous night's celebrations, and to make heartfelt resolutions for the coming year.

Many Malaysians and Singaporeans eat Yu Sheng as a lucky lunar New Year dish, gathering around the table to throw the ingredients in the air while shouting out New Year wishes and blessings, in a celebration known as "lo hei" or "toss high".

From 5.30pm-6.30pm traditional lion dancers will also make their way from the carpark through the arcade, and staff will be handing out red envelopes as a symbol of energy, happiness and good luck throughout the afternoon and evening.

The celebration will include a buffet dinner as well as Chinese cultural and artistic performances.

At the University of Victoria, the holiday was celebrated in advance on February 4 in an gala extravaganza of music, dance, magic and drama at the University of Victoria's Farquhar Auditorium. This year, the New Year falls on February 16. But although there are 12 animals, there are different varieties and this year will be the first year of the earth dog since 1958.
