Cardinals receiver Fitzgerald to return next season

Despite considering retirement, Larry Fitzgerald will return for his 15th season with the Arizona Cardinals.

Fitzgerald told new Cardinals coach Steve Wilks on Wednesday night that he intends to play in 2018 and finish his contract extension.

Fitzgerald needs 92 catches and 390 yards to move to number two all-time on the NFL's receiving leaders list. Fitzgerald, who will turn 35 in August 31, will make $11 million in base salary this season, the final year of his contract extension. Arizona also has a first-year head coach in Wilks and a new offensive coordinator in Mike McCoy.

McCoy's onus with Fitzgerald specifically should be keeping exactly what worked under Arians during the brilliant late-career transformation of the third-leading receiver in National Football League history.

"I'm extremely excited", Wilks continued.

He is now third all-time in receiving yards (15,545) and receptions (1,234), and eighth in receiving touchdowns (110).

Gabbert completed 95 of 171 passes for 1,086 yards last season with six touchdowns and six interceptions. In Week 16, his last game at University of Phoenix Stadium, he surpassed the 1,000-yard mark for the ninth time in his career, ranking him third all-time, trailing only Jerry Rice (14) and Moss (10).

The 34-year-old Fitzgerald is the Cardinals' franchise leader in almost every statistical receiving category, including receptions, yards and touchdowns. It was his third straight season of 100 and 1,000.

Larry Fitzgerald is coming back.

At the recent Super Bowl, Fitzgerald did sound optimistic about the new staff but would not commit to a return.
