Canadian women's hockey team beats U.S. 2-1 at PyeongChang Olympics

On the minus side, the power play was sloppy at times while going 0-for-5. Rooney was in net for all three of the American wins over Canada last fall. She stuffed in her own rebound off an athletic Shannon Szabados save following a Canadian defensive letdown.

It's one of the greatest rivalries in sports: Team USA vs Canada in women's hockey. And in their Group A finale, this continued, with America's northern neighbors winning 2-1.

Both teams will advance to the semifinals. "You take one game at a time". Canada outshot Finland 32-23 for the game.

"It's a rivalry, what would anyone else expect but exactly that", said USA coach Rob Stauber. "We always want to be better". "We just got to kind of keep it coming". "There's lots of real positives in our play".

Finland broke Szabados' bid for a second straight Canadian shutout midway through the third, as Riikka Valila scored on a third effort in the slot for her first of the tournament. Referees initially waved off the goal, but video review confirmed the puck crossed the goal line. The Finns, who lost 3-1 to the U.S.in its opener, are two-time bronze medallists. It will complete group play Thursday (Korea time) vs. the archrival US, which played the Olympic Athletes from Russia (OAR) later Tuesday. Canada was led in scoring by Daoust and Agosta, who each had one goal and one assist for two points.

Agosta opened the scoring just 35 seconds into the game, as Daoust intercepted a pass in the neutral zone, outwaited sprawling Finish defender Jenni Hiirikoski, and fed a flawless saucer pass over to an open Agosta for her first of the tournament.

On the disallowed goal, Schuler said she did not get an explanation but had no beef with the decision, saying the scoreboard showed it didn't cross the goal-line.

No matter, given the way the offence is humming.

With less than two minutes left Saulnier made history, catching the Finns on a bad line change and firing a wrister on a breakaway, becoming the first Nova Scotian woman to score in the Olympics.

But judging by the smiles and a roundabout acknowledgement from Agosta, through two games they are starting to look formidable.

"I think it let everybody see on our team where we are at and what we can do". "It's a short-term competition". "Moving forward, we need to continue to focus on playing our game and working on the details that will continue to make us successful".

Natalie Spooner, playing in her 100th game for Team Canada, made a no-look backhand pass to set up Agosta at 7:18 of the first period to give the Canadians a 1-0 advantage. Saulnier padded the lead at 18:26 after being put in alone on a ideal pass from Johnston.

Kendall Coyne scored the lone goal for the Americans.

"To be able to contribute to that win was a pretty memorable moment".

There are two groups of women's hockey teams in the 2018 Olympics: Group A and Group B. They have four teams each.

One of the speedy youngsters in the lineup, Saulnier has been hard to miss in the two opening wins. It could have been a mere preview of the battle for gold expected to come next week.

Canada coach Laura Schuler was happy with the win, especially Lacasse's performance.
