Blocking Trans Mountain is 'illegal,' says former BC Premier Christy Clark

In fact, things grew into a partial trade war, after Alberta retaliated for the new rules by suspending imports of B.C. wine.

The province of British Columbia is right to oppose the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion.

In the second case, B.C.'s actions can be seen as a tactic to slow the proposed Trans Mountain expansion, increase its cost and uncertainty, and potentially change the economics of the project.

In an interview with CTV's Question Period, Clark echoed Alberta Premier Rachel Notley's accusations that B.C.is illegally trying to stop Kinder Morgan's $7.4-billion project, which has already earned federal approval.

"Mr. Horgan is doing his due diligence, and Mr. Wilkinson frankly doesn't even know the file", Weaver said.

"We just can't sit by, because the consequences are too great for this matter not to be addressed fully", she said.

Trudeau has said he doesn't plan on wading into the inter-provincial spat, but that Kinder Morgan will be built.

Premier Notley also recently cancelled negotiations of a planned purchase of electric power from B.C., and removed B.C. wine imports in Alberta.

Finally, the B.C. government's action is a hard slap at Premier Notley's plans to essentially buy off pipeline opponents with an explosion of climate change policies, which include banning coal-power generation, escalating carbon taxes, hard caps on carbon-emission reductions, additional limits on air emissions from the oil and gas sector, and more spending on every "green dream" on the wish-list of pipeline opponents.

McKenna shut down criticism leveled by some that the new regulations undermine current projects, such as the Trans Mountain pipeline.

"These jobs employ real people with families whose livelihoods depend on them", Moe said in a statement posted to Facebook Thursday.

It appears that B.C.'s NDP Premier John Horgan is playing to his political base and their anti-pipeline philosophy.

"If the B.C. government is threatening to violate the constitution, the economic union, which is a central guarantee of our constitution, they can't do it without repercussions", he said.

But Kinder Morgan was painstakingly negotiated, environmentally assessed and given a thumbs up by the previous provincial government and the federal government.

Notley said there was no specific timeline or date set for the task force's first meetings, but she said she's spoken with individual members of the group and that she expects engagement on the issue to unfold over the following days and weeks.

Grande Prairie-Mackenzie MP Chris Warkentin is calling on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to put his foot down and end the Trans Mountain pipeline dispute.
