Android P is reportedly being built with support for #notchlife

As well as the name, other leaked details on the next version of Android include support for phones that adopt a similar notch to the iPhone X.

The update will also bring with it better battery life and support for foldable displays, according to the report. Google will therefore adapt Android to take into account screen designs that incorporate a notch.

The piece notes that not all Android manufacturers are expected to follow Google's lead, though Huawei is believed to be working on a similar design.

The report indicates that Google is putting more of a concerted effort into swaying Apple customers over to the Android ecosystem, and not simply by updating the software. The notch houses the complex TrueDepth cameras for facial recognition as well as the front-facing camera. Other than familiarity factor, the notch can also host several sensors, multiple cameras and a lot more, which can significantly enhance the Android experience for new users.

Distribution for Android Oreo, the most recent version of the OS, isn't great. Google embracing the notch could lead to its OEM partners further tweaking their own software and not letting notches come to all phones. It seems Google is confident that the notch design will catch up among consumers despite some users finding it obnoxious while watching videos in landscape mode. Third-party developers may even be able to integrate Google Assistant into their apps.

Google is also exploring the option to integrate the search bar on the Android home screen with the Assistant.

The new version of Android - which Bloomberg says is called "Pistachio Ice Cream" internally - will apparently be designed with the space for a cutout at the top, much like the iPhone X and its so-called "notch". The new OS is said to be "dramatically redesigned" and accommodating a notch will help OEMs incorporate new features. Android Oreo, which was rolled out previous year, still represents only a minuscule share of the entire Android market.
