4 killed, 15 trapped after under-construction building collapses in Karnataka

"Rescue operations are underway", Bengaluru Mayor Sampath Raj told the News Minutes. Construction experts blame the lax administration and corruption for flouting building rules, which often results in using poor quality materials, inadequate supervision and poor safety standards for workers.

According to the police, seven people were rescued by fire and emergency personnel with the help of local residents immediately after the collapse while more than 13 are feared trapped inside the debris. The incident took lives of 32 people and 14 were left injured.

The injured have been shifted to a nearby hospital while rescue operation by the Bengaluru fire force and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) is ongoing. Meanwhile, The Hindu reported that one worker was killed in the collapse.

A five-storey under-construction building on Thursday afternoon collapsed at Sarjapur road in Bengaluru's Kasavanahalli locality.

Reports said the building belonged to a Kerala-based person named Ahmed.

So far, seven labourers have been rescued by the rescue team, which reached the spot as soon as the news was given to them. It is learnt that there were labourers from other states as well. "We are gathering more information".

The construction had started six years ago but was stopped midway. The construction resumed six months ago, the deputy commissioner said.
