19-year-old shoots 17 dead at U.S. high school

The update is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Thursday near the school in Parkland, Florida, an affluent town in northwest Broward County, about 15 miles from Boca Raton.

The president offered sympathy in a tweet Wednesday and said he spoke with Florida's governor, but he has not addressed the nation.

"Im going to be a professional school shooter", read the comment, left by a user with the name Nikolas Cruz, the same name of the suspected shooter who opened fire at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School on Wednesday, killing at least 17 people.

Police arrested him soon after the incident.

Trump, who has not yet spoken publicly about the latest attack, skirted that debate in an early morning tweet, instead emphasizing the shooter's mental state.

"Neighbours and classmates knew he was a big problem".

Just before the shooting broke out, some students at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School thought they were having another fire drill. He opened fire at terrified students and teachers.

A former classmate, Joshua Charo, told said that Cruz spoke about shooting rats with a BB gun.

This is one of the deadliest school massacres in U.S. history where around 32 people were killed and 17 injured when a senior student Seung-Hui Cho carried out shooting in two separate attacks inside campus in Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Virginia's Blacksburg. His son also told him that he walked by two people on the ground motionless - and apparently dead - as students rushed outside. The 17 deaths have now eclipsed the 1999 Columbine massacre as the most deadly high school shooting in US history.

Officials said another 14 people have been treated at area hospitals. He was still wearing a hospital gown when he was brought to the Broward County Jail in Fort Lauderdale for booking Thursday.

A heavily armed young man barged into his former high school about an hour northwest of Miami on Wednesday.

During a press conference, Broward County Sheriff said Cruz legally purchased an AR-15.

Seventeen people were killed, including an athletic coach who reportedly shielded students from the bullets. Authorities are now releasing more information about alleged gunman Nikolas Cruz to paint more of a picture of what went on inside the school and what would his motive may have been.

Senator Marco Rubio called Cruz "deeply disturbed", citing troubling social-media posts, the recent death of Lynda Cruz, past referrals to authorities and "things not made public" by authorities.

Mr Obama proposed it after the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting that killed 20 children, with the regulation set to have been finalized in December 2016.
