17 killed in Florida school shooting by former student

Students at the Florida high school that lost at least 17 people to a deadly shooting on Wednesday "predicted" that Nikolas Cruz would "shoot up the school" one day, a student said.

Students wait outside the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School at University Drive and Holmberg Road in Parkland, Florida, following a shooting that prompted a massive police response and manhunt.

Cruz was taken into custody almost two hours after the shooting was reported, authorities said.

The suspect, 19-year-old former student Nikolas Cruz, is in custody.

The suspect is a former student of the high school involved and had been previously expelled for unspecified disciplinary reasons.

Police say the gunman was armed with a semiautomatic AR-15 rifle and carried "multiple" magazines with him.

Cristina Vega, a student, told 7 News Miami that returning to the school will be extremely hard.

"Seventeen people were taken to the Broward Health hospitals", said Dr. Evan Boyar, Chair and Medical Director of Broward Health North.

"We routinely run drills or institution to be ready for instances like this so we have a process in place that gets initiated, so there's calm, collected care that our patients receive", Dr. Boyar said.

Yet even as officials gain a clearer understanding of how the shooter conducted the attack, law enforcement is opening its investigation into a still more hard question: why.

Parent John Obin said his child had been in class when he heard shots ring out.

At least 12 of those deaths occurred in the school itself. The Florida school shooting in now among the 10 deadliest mass shootings in modern U.S. history.

Kansas leaders are tweeting reaction after an active shooter opened fire at a Florida high school on Wednesday.

US President Donald Trump sent his "prayers and condolences" to the families of those who died in the "terrible" shooting.

Rosenblatt said that her daughter made the connection after the shooting, when she visited the purported Instagram account of the shooter.
