Zuma Wants Dlamini-Zuma As Interim President If He Resigns

President Jacob Zuma has reportedly set a number of conditions which will need to be fulfilled before he steps down as South Africa's president.

Supporters of President Jacob Zuma are demanding that his pro-nuclear deal Cabinet minister retains his job and for his ex-wife Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma to be appointed as interim president until the next general election‚ before agreeing to any proposed exit deal for the man from Nkandla.

Zuma also reportedly asked that key members within his cabinet stay in power and become a part of Ramaphosa's team.

But, the ANC's National Executive Committee met for the first time Wednesday since the party's leadership election, at which it emerged that Zuma's position was not discussed. City Press reported that Ramaphosa's backers were planning for him to take over the reins in the next few weeks and have him deliver the state of the nation address in February.

But sources told the Mail & Guardian that the negotiations had deadlocked this week with ANC officials refusing to guarantee Zuma's conditions.

Political analyst Lukhona Mnguni believes the option to appoint Dlamini Zuma as interim president should not be presented along factional lines.

African National Congress secretary general Ace Magashule briefs the media at the Absa Stadium in East London, on 12 January 2018.

At the meeting, ANC members said they did not discuss any action to have Zuma step down.

"It is quite clear that Ramaphosa is not equal to the task of getting rid Zuma as the majority of the ANC is still made up of corrupt and selfish leaders who put filling their own pockets before the needs of the people‚" Van Damme said.

"If it is seen as a president Zuma win, it will hamstring Ramaphosa to the point where people will say he's too soft and not in charge".
