Watch Dutch Reporters Brutalize Trump Ambassador Over False Claims About Muslims

The new US ambassador to the Netherlands made mistakes and feels great remorse for falsely saying two years ago that Muslim migrants had "burned" politicians and created "no-go zones" in Holland, a State Department official said on Thursday.

At his first news conference at The Hague, Dutch reporters pressed Hoekstra about his 2015 comments that Muslims have sown chaos and rendered parts of the Netherlands "no-go zones" where cars and politicians are "being burned".

In 2015, Hoekstra claimed that "stealth jihad" was taking place in Europe via refugees - who he referred to as "invaders" - and that the entire country was in a state of "chaos", according to The Intercept.

"Mr. Ambassador, can you mention any example of a Dutch politician who was burned in recent years?" Another told the former congressman, "This is the Netherlands; you have to answer questions". Hoekstra said there is "chaos in the Netherlands, there are cars being burned, there are politicians that are being burned". Hoekstra refused to answer the question, but the brutal interrogation wasn't over.

Goldstein said Hoekstra would be interviewed by a Dutch media outlet on Friday and was expected to address the issue. Hoekstra later denied using the phrase fake news.

There are no instances in modern Dutch history of politicians being set alight, and no areas of the country considered no-go zones.

He takes up the post as USA envoy left vacant for two years, and as immigration is set to again be a hot-button issue in the Dutch local elections due on March 21.

But a video of Hoekstra's appearance at a 2015 conference in Charleston, South Carolina, hosted by the David Horowitz Freedom Center, is available online.

"I'm not revisiting the issue", Hoekstra said, when asked if he still believed his 2015 comments. "We'd call that fake news".

In a December 23 note on Twitter Hoekstra acknowledged having made the comments in 2015 and said he regretted his exchange with the Dutch news organization: "I made certain remarks in 2015 and regret the exchange during the Nieuwsuur interview". "Please accept my apology", he wrote.

When last December, the ambassador denied ever making them.

A former representative for MI for 18 years in the US Congress, Hoekstra was born in the northern Dutch city of Groningen before his parents emigrated when he was just three.

In contrast to the Dutch reporters at the briefing, the White House Press Corps has been criticized for agreeing to off-camera briefings for several weeks last summer and failing to call out White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders and follow up when she refuses to answer questions or responds with lies about the administration.
