US Resumes Accepting DACA Renewals

In deciding to end Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, the Trump administration had called it an egregious example of executive overreach.

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services posted on its website that the federal agency had begun accepting renewals until "further notice".

"Until further notice, and unless otherwise provided in this guidance, the DACA policy will be operated on the terms in place before it was rescinded on September 5, 2017", the update said. No new applications will be accepted.

"The new administration didn't terminate DACA on policy grounds", Alsup wrote in the opinion. "So great great news for DACA that we will now be able to do DACA renewals".

Mirka Dominguez Salinas, a DACA recipient, says she worries the federal order is only temporary.

The Department of Justice has indicated it will appeal the judge's decision, a move that could again put the program on hold.

Young undocumented immigrants, known as "Dreamers", rally outside the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday in support of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals. But it's not clear where negotiations stand after Trump allegedly made vulgar and derisive comments about accepting immigrants from "shithole countries" during a meeting Thursday with senators at the White House.

More: What is DACA and who qualified? Already about 120 DACA recipients who failed to renew applications by October 5 deadline are losing deportation protections and work permits daily. What will the end of the deferred action program mean?

Trump's decision on DACA in September set an October 5 deadline for renewal applications, which would give recipients an another two years of legal residency in the United States. Losing DACA is a fear many of them have.

The Obama administration began the program in 2012, which enabled certain young immigrants brought to the USA illegally as children to apply for work permits and protection from deportation. Those accepted for the program received permits to work legally in the USA for two years, which could be renewed for additional 2-year periods.

California Attorney General Xavier Becerra praised the ruling.
