Trump's first State of the Union to focus on economy, immigration

Massachusetts Congressman Joe Kennedy III will be delivering the democratic response to President Donald Trump's State of the Union address, democratic leaders announces Thursday.

To date, four Congressional members - Democrats John Lewis, Maxine Waters, Frederica Wilson and Pramila Jayapal - have already indicated that they will skip the speech following Trump's reported remarks that African nations were "s**thole countries" during a January 11 meeting at the White House discussing immigration.

The speech is expected to adhere to the administration's new National Security Strategy and National Defense Strategy.

This year will be no different, and Trump is expected to speak about individuals who have benefitted from the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act he signed into law on December 24. White House legislative director Marc Short says the president will "talk about how America's back" and will appeal to Democrats to work with him on improving the nation's infrastructure.

As for the coming year, Trump plans to discuss a trillion-dollar infrastructure proposal created to fix the nation's roads and bridges, and to build new ones. "That is why I will not attend the official State of the Union, and instead will join activists from across the country, women of color and others in holding our own State of OUR Union, where we resist this racism and put forward our own progressive vision for our beloved country".

Trump will take the podium in the U.S. House chamber less than a week after his aides unveiled a new immigration plan, including a revival of a program to block deportation of young people brought into the country illegally by their parents. The senior administration official called it a trillion-dollar plan, but could not give an exact figure.

Some Democratic lawmakers have invited Dreamers as guests to Capitol Hill to hear the speech in person.

Gribbin told dozens of USA mayors on Thursday that Trump's long-delayed infrastructure proposal will include $200 billion in public spending, with the rest of the $1 trillion plan consisting of private tax incentives. He will insist in his speech on "fair and reciprocal" trade deals, the official said.

The official on Friday didn't touch on specifics. She is one of a few politicians who has called for Trump's impeachment, saying repeatedly that she thinks special counsel Robert Mueller's Russian Federation investigation will result in evidence of Trump's collusion with the country during the 2016 election.

For example, Trump was praised for his unifying tone in his first address to Congress last February. Officials hope that it will allow Trump to communicate unfiltered to Americans about why his policies are part of a common-sense agenda.
