Tourists Evacuated from Zermatt after Extreme Avalanche Danger Leaves Thousands Stranded

About 13,000 tourists are trapped at a ski resort with sporadic power outages near the Matterhorn mountain in Switzerland, after the avalanche risk was raised to its highest level.

Romy Biner, the head of the Zermatt town council, told SRF the airlift was for guests who urgently needed to leave and to bring in supplies.

Hundreds of tourists have been airlifted from the Swiss ski resort of Zermatt, which is one of several resorts in the Alps to have been closed due to heavy snowfall over the past few days.

"The situation is actually very calm in the village", Christian Ziorjen from Zermatt Tourism said. The resort website says: "Without question, it is inadvisable to engage in ski touring, freeriding and snowshoe hiking outside marked and open pistes". Elsewhere in the canton of Valais the villages of Gondo and Saas were also cut off after landslides on the roads, while the road between St Luc and Zinal in the Val d'Anniviers was closed on Tuesday morning due to the high avalanche risk.

Rail and road links were cut off after at least 80 centimeters (31.5 inches) of snow dropped on the area over 24 hours, according to Switzerland's WSL Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research.

The avalanche risk is set at the rarely used maximum on a five-point scale.

An avalanche hit a five-storey building in Sestrieres, in the Italian Alps, late on Monday, but the 29 people staying in the building escaped without injury, fleeing through the garage.

Meanwhile, an aerial search has failed to locate British snowboarder John Bromell, 39, who went missing in the French resort of Tignes on Sunday. At lower altitudes, heavy rains forced the evacuation of around 20 people from Eyholz village with the nearby hamlet of Mottec also emptied as a precaution, Swiss media reports said.

Swiss authorities said they expect weather in the area to improve on Wednesday.
