Tonya Harding's Mom Disputes Knife Throwing Incident Depicted in 'I, Tonya'

With its title tongue-in-cheekily evoking "I, Claudius", another epic tale of madness and debauchery, the dramatic comedy "I, Tonya" revisits - with verve, intelligence, scathing humor and more than a touch of sadness - the weird 1994 attack on figure skater Nancy Kerrigan, by goons associated with the camp of Kerrigan's athletic rival, Tonya Harding. While Harding did go on to compete in the Olympics that year, the incident ultimately ended her career as a skater, and oddly launched her into mild stardom as a boxer. "She's a different person than she was back then", Teachman said. The following is Vader's take on the new film about the infamous Tonya Harding/Nancy Kerrigan saga, "I, Tonya".

In an interview with ABC News" Amy Robach for the two-hour special Truth and Lies: "The Tonya Harding Story, which aired Thursday night, Harding claims she was innocent of planning to attack Kerrigan.

Tonya Harding, left, and Nancy Kerrigan at the 1992 U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Orlando, Fla.

But watch as her life is lived with these kooky characters, beginning with Allison Janney in her Golden Globe-winning performance as Harding's mother, LaVona, who makes Joan Crawford look like a lightweight. A FBI investigation into the attack discovered that Shawn was a friend of Jeff Gillooly, Tonya's ex-husband, according to The New York Times.

Of course colleague Abby Haight and I were in Detroit when Nancy Kerrigan was attacked by a club-wielding thug, and reported on all the madness to follow back home in Portland. January 26-27, 1994: Gillooly confesses to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, implicating himself, Harding, Eckardt, Smith and Shane Stant.

But it wasn't long before Piers began asking about the well publicised assault, arranged by her ex-husband Jeff Gillooly, which appeared to rattle Tonya somewhat. January 31, 1994: Nike pledges $25,000 to help keep Harding in the Olympics.

Harding said Golden has never met her son.

Kerrigan later skated in the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer and won silver, while Harding did not place in the top three slots. March 16, 1994: Harding pleads guilty to conspiracy to hinder prosecution.

Dody Teachman, who was her coach at the 1991 U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Minneapolis, Minnesota, still coaches Harding today. She was later stripped of the 1994 national title. July 13, 1994: Gillooly is sentenced to two years in jail and fined $100,000 for racketeering.

Harding opened up about the incident, as well as her hard childhood, her rise in competitive figure skating and the depiction of her life in the new critically-acclaimed movie, "I, Tonya", starring actress Margot Robbie, in ABC News' two-hour special, "Truth and Lies: The Tonya Harding Story", which airs January 11, 2018, at 9 p.m. ET.
