'Three Billboards,' 'Lady Bird' win big at the Golden Globes

Frances McDormand won Best Actress, Sam Rockwell nabbed the Best Actor in a Supporting Role and Martin McDonagh bagged the Best Screenplay honour for it.

The evening began with the normally colorful red carpet transformed into a sea of black gowns as every actress showed solidarity with victims of sexual harassment inside and outside the entertainment industry.

"Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri" won the big prize at Sunday's Golden Globes.

To get into the nitty gritty of the plot of this film would be to spoil it entirely but I can say this: whatever you think you know, you don't.

But having a Golden Globe doesn't mean you are a lock to win best picture on Oscar night.

With a supporting cast that includes "Game of Thrones" alum Peter Dinklage as a would-be lothario who is all too aware of his flaws, Sandy Martin of "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" as Rockwell's crotchety mother, and Caleb Landry Jones, fresh off last year's "Twin Peaks", as the young advertising executive whom McDormand pays for the use of his eponymous three billboards, McDonagh is able to render almost every character as complex, compassionate and deserving of compassion.

Oldman had never won a Golden Globe in his 40 year career, so it's encouraging to see him finally lift some gold but there are questions as to whether this is the Oldman performance that deserved to break his awards duck.

Now freshly minted as the victor of best drama at the Golden Globes, Martin McDonagh simply stunning subversive tale is the first must-see of 2018. Weinstein presided over two decades of Globes winners and was well-known for his savvy manipulation of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the 89-member group that puts on the Globes. Willem Dafoe's career-best performance in The Florida Project has snatched up almost every critics' award over the past few months and it seemed all but confirmed that he'd do the same thing last night at the Globes.

At the 75th Golden Globe Awards in Los Angeles on Sunday, the big winners were Lady Bird, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. Sterling K. Brown won Best Actor in a Drama Series for This is Us, while Big Little Lies ruled the TV Movie and Miniseries categories.

McDormand said she was proud to be a woman in the industry.

The Best Director category was jam-packed with deserving winners (although, as pointed out by Natalie Portman on the night, it was also noticeably all-male), with several major names not making the cut.

"Best Motion Picture Musical or Comedy" went to Ladybird, with cast member Saoirse Ronan taking home the award for Best Actress. The movie, along with McDormand and Rockwell, will be in the running when Oscar nominations are announced January 23. Guillermo del Toro won the trophy in the Best Director category.

James Franco was awarded Best Actor in a Comedy or Musical - Motion Picture for his portrayal as the illustrious Tommy Wiseau in The Disaster Artist. And my decision to predict Allison Janney ("I, Tonya") to win Best Film Supporting Actress was based exclusively on the fact that "I, Tonya" deserved to win something and this was the only logical place to reward it. Although Laurie Metcalf ("Lady Bird") was a formidable front-runner, her film had its chances elsewhere.
