Teens are eating laundry pods in new social media challenge

"They can cause chemical burns around the mouth and can cause burns inside the mouth, nausea and vomiting, you can get aspiration, pneumonia, and have breathing problems", she explained.

The "Tide Pod Challenge" shows a number of online photos depicting the laundry pods as a pizza topping or breakfast cereal.

That's four years after Procter and Gamble chose to redesign its packaging to make it harder for children to access the pods.

A number of videos of the challenge have been uploaded to YouTube, while memes of the challenge have exploded across multiple social media platforms.

The trend started out as a joke, as the laundry pods look nearly like candy due to their colors. The containers are no longer see-through and the lids are more child resistant.

The Tide Pod Challenge has gotten so alarmingly popular that Proctor and Gamble, the parent company of Tide, has issued a statement on the trend.

The first reported death linked to detergent packs was in 2013 and involved a less festively designed All brand unit-dose product eaten by a child staying with his mother at battered women's shelter.

According to the American Association of Poison Control Centers, there were more than 10,500 reported exposures to highly concentrated laundry detergent by children age 5 and younger in 2017. All was then owned by Sun Products, now by Henkel.

Teenagers are using Tide Pods for the challenge. Videos are being posted of people biting into the detergent pacs and spitting them out. Soon enough, the ideas turned into reality, giving birth to one of the social media's deadliest trends in the recent times.

A spokesman said: 'Our laundry pacs are a highly concentrated detergent meant to clean clothes and they're used safely in millions of households every day. "They should be only used to clean clothes and kept up, closed and away from children".

Read the product safety information provided on the package. "The internet is a communication tool enabling people to freely express themselves as they wish", Renck says.
