Red Cross in 'urgent need' of blood; W. Springfield hosts drive

Severe winter weather has had a tremendous impact on blood donations already this year, with more than 150 blood drives forced to cancel causing over 5,500 blood and platelet donations to go uncollected. That, combined with seasonal illnesses and holiday schedules, has resulted in the local Red Cross receiving approximately 28,000 fewer donations than needed, according to a news release from the organization.

The Red Cross tries to prioritize locally, but can distribute blood to hospitals all over the country. "They can donate to anyone, so that's what we need right now, but we need all blood types because we are running really low on our supplies", said Ronda Kindred, Donor Recruiter for LifeSouth Community Blood Center.

"If you are eligible to, please consider donating at an upcoming blood drive or call the Red Cross to make an appointment", he added. Factors that could make volunteers ineligible to donate include being ill, being underweight or taking certain medications, among other factors.

Samantha Pollard, Red Cross spokeswoman for the Midwest Blood Services Region, said winter weather has not yet significantly affected Nebraska as a whole.

Blood donors can use RapidPass to complete pre-donation readings and health history questionnaires online at redcrossblood.org/rapidpass prior to the blood drive. It opened as a Red Cross site March 2017.

All blood types are needed, especially O-negative, which is universal and can be used for anyone.

While there is always a need for all blood types, local blood donation centers have highlighted a critical need for certain types, including Type O negative, which can be transfused to nearly anyone, making it a go-to blood type for emergency responders and doctors in urgent trauma care; Type B negative, which can be transfused to B positive and negative and AB positive and negative patients; and Type AB, which has a plasma type that can be transfused to nearly anyone.
