Putin says Kremlin critic Navalny is USA pick for Russian presidency

The U.S. will not be prepared to defend against possible Russian meddling in the 2018 midterm elections or the 2020 presidential contest unless it takes action now, according to a new report detailing the extent to which Moscow has tried to shape elections across Europe.

U.S. Senate Democrats on Wednesday warned that Russian operations to undermine democracy extend far beyond U.S. elections and accused President Donald Trump of failing to confront the threat. Ben Cardin of Maryland, the top Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, is the first from Congress to detail alleged Russian efforts to undermine democracies since the 2016 US presidential election.

Sen. Ben Cardin (D-MD) speaks during a news conference on Capitol Hill in Washington, Wednesday, May 24, 2017, about the Paris climate agreement.

"If the United States fails to work with urgency to address this complex and growing threat, the regime in Moscow will become further emboldened", the report says.

Since the January 2017 conclusion by USA intelligence agencies that Russian Federation engaged in a hacking-and-propaganda campaign to sway the 2016 presidential election, Moscow has repeatedly denied the accusation of meddling.

Peskov dismissed the accusations as an "obsessive idea" in Washington that could hurt "not just U.S".

The report calls for Trump to establish a high-level inter-agency group to coordinate US policy in response to the Russian government's operations. "Obiektivi's xenophobic, homophobic, and anti-western narrative helped the Alliance of Patriots clear the threshold to enter parliament during the October 2016 election", reads the report. It is also a fact that Putin does this to other countries.

"As long as the Americans continue to play the Russian card in their domestic political struggle, it will keep souring our relations", he said.

When discussing France (Chapter 6), the report repeats claims that Russian Federation was behind the alleged hack of President Emmanuel Macron's emails, though the head of the National Cybersecurity Agency of France (ANSSI) Guillaume Poupard could not confirm this was the case.

Although President Trump has previously said he accepted the conclusion of the USA intelligence community, he reversed course after meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin during a November trip to Asia.

Without fully understanding that threat, the staffer said, "you can't prevent it from happening again".

In a statement, a spokesperson for Senator Bob Corker of Tennessee said, "We [committee Republicans] received a copy [of the Democratic report] on Monday evening". Under Corker, the committee has conducted oversight and helped expand sanctions against Russian Federation for its "continued aggression, including its brazen cyber-attacks and interference in elections", Micah Johnson said.

The report describes the Kremlin's strategy towards various European countries, with a particular focus on Hungary as the EU's weak link. "This Administration has no higher priority than protecting the national security and public safety of the United States".

Titled "Never before has a president ignored such a clear national security threat", Cardin says Trump is completely ignoring his responsibility to ensure that Russian Federation doesn't meddle in the upcoming 2018 elections in November.

Soerensen warned that the insufficient USA support for European efforts to counter the Russian meddling will mean "insecurity will spread", adding there is a fear that "that there will be attempts to influence elections". At their most extreme, the Russian government's security services have been used to harass and even assassinate political enemies at home and overseas; cheat at the Olympic Games; and protect and exploit cybercriminals in Russia who attack American businesses and steal the financial information of American consumers. It urges a new sanctions designation for "state hybrid threat actors" - countries that use traditional and nontraditional means, like cyberwarfare, to destabilize other nations.
