Oil drilling rig explosion in Oklahoma, 5 people missing

Five people are missing after a gas well explosion in Pittsburg County, Oklahoma Monday (1/22).

LLC was drilling a new well for Red Mountain Operating LLC of Oklahoma City when the explosion occurred, according to Kevin Enloe, emergency management director for Pittsburg County, Okla.

The local sheriff says more than 20 employees were on site when a drilling rig exploded in eastern Oklahoma, and five remain unaccounted for. "It's a pretty traumatic thing to go through".

At least one person was air lifted after a fire at an oil well near Quinton.

Video from Osage SkyNews 6 HD shows the heat from the fire eventually caused the derrick to collapse, and several fires were burning at the site. Morris could not confirm any fatalities or injuries.

"There's been several explosions since the guys have been on the scene fighting the fire", Enloe said.

FOX23 sent out the alert around 9 a.m., when Pittsburg County Emergency Managers and the County sheriff confirmed an explosion and fire. The well is a natural gas and oil well. Patterson is a drilling rig operating company. Emergency crews could be seen staging well away from the fire.

A primary explosion on one well head led to fires on three wells in last year's well incident, but Enloe said the two events had different circumstances. In a statement, company officials said they were unaware of what caused the fire. Enloe said firefighters were letting the blaze burn and weren't putting water on it to keep from spreading possible hazardous materials at the site.

Enloe said the Patterson site recently started drilling and experts are working to shut off the well after the blowout preventor - created to automatically shut down a well - became inoperable due to the explosion. We will provide more details as they are known.

Oklahoma Emergency Management officials say they have contacted the Department of Environmental Quality and the Corporation Commission.
