Mom of the Boy Featured in H&M's Controversial Ad Speaks Out

In a series of since-deleted Facebook posts, Terry Mango said she didn't support the backlash over the ad. The celebrity went as far as cutting his ties with the brand over the matter.

Originally from H&M's United Kingdom website, the image earned social media condemnation late Sunday and on Monday; criticized as being everything from tone-deaf to shockingly ignorant to racist.

But many people disagreed with the accusations which forced H&M to remove the post entirely.

I, as a privileged white student, don't get to decide what someone of another race finds offensive - especially since the race in question has been beaten down and treated as something less than human by my own race throughout history - I don't get to do that.

Speaking to, Ms Mango later revealed she had been targeted by trolls over her comments, including those who used "monkey" as a racial slur.

She said: "How can you fight racism if you make racist remarks?", she said.

"Am the mum and this is one of hundreds of outfits my son has modelled..."

H&M has since apologized for what everyone believed to be racist.

Singer, The Weeknd also announced his disassociation with H&M after the clothing brand was forced to apologise for a racist advert.

It's obvious that our routines haven't been followed properly. Many others shared similar thoughts. "We, who work at H&M, can only agree".

"We are deeply sorry that the picture was taken, and we also regret the actual print", the company said in a statement. It is a shame that this young child is being brought into this conversation since he did not make this choice for himself, but serves as a reminder that companies, like H&M, need to make a bigger commitment to having diversity behind the scenes and not just with models.

Lukaku, 24, who has more than 2.3m Instagram followers, wrote: "You're prince soon to be a king". We want to live in a society where we do not see people as one race or another; we want to be colour-blind, so to speak.

He wrote: "H&M you got us all wrong! Straight up!" the Cleveland Cavaliers star wrote on Instagram Monday.

This is the kind of thing that lets you know that no people of color were around or consulted in the marketing of this product.

The advert has received widespread criticism on social media - including from basketball star LeBron James.
