With almost 600 flu cases last week, Central Florida's Centra Care centers reported a 200-percent increase compared with the same time a year ago and a 400-percent increase compared to 2015.

Symptoms are similar to normal flu but are more severe. And all indications suggest we haven't seen the peak of this year's season, yet. "It might just be starting earlier".

Last week, with news that there had been more than 2,000 new flu cases in a single week, the county added six to the death toll, pushing the season total to 11.

Cases are reported on a voluntary bases so that number could be much higher.

But the year before that, in 2013, there were far fewer, with 216 intensive care unit admissions and five outbreaks.

State health officials warned last month that they were seeing an uptick in flu activity. If people continue to feel really ill after a week it could indicate something more serious.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that Louisiana is among the three dozen states across the country with the highest confirmed number of illnesses through symptoms and laboratory surveillance. Several hospital systems, including Northwestern Medicine hospitals and the 12 Advocate Health Care hospitals across Chicagoland and central IL, have done so.

Most hospital visits by children under 15, for example, are not being allowed for the time being.

As with the United States, health experts in the UK are growing concerned as this season appears to be the worst influenza virus outbreak in 50 years with the same H3N2 virus causing havoc among British citizens and the medical establishment, while the same virus strain is also causing havoc in Australia as well.

Public Health England has announced that the trivalent vaccine is not effective against influenza B, a common strain of the flu which is now circulating. It does work a little bit, but even for people who have had the vaccine, they can still contract Influenza A this year.

If health providers suspect the flu, they should err on the side of caution and prescribe antivirals instead of waiting for lab confirmations, according to the state health department.

Lawrence said the people who have been hospitalized with flu this season mostly have the H3N2 virus strain of influenza A.

Public Health England revealed 1,649 people had been struck down with Aussie flu over the Christmas week, up nearly half on the week before. It would be effective for the rest of the season, which typically lasts through April. "In the past, A (H3N2) virus-predominant influenza seasons have been associated with more hospitalizations and deaths in persons aged 65 years and older and young children compared to other age groups", the CDC said.

"These deaths are a sad reminder that influenza hits the very young, very old and those with weakened immune systems especially hard", said state epidemiologist and public health department medical director Dr. Patricia Quinlisk. "The waiting rooms are full, there are long waits to be seen and a high proportion of the patients are testing positive for flu".

Dr. Brandon Chappell, an emergency department physician at Methodist Hospital in Henderson, said the department has been seeing 10-20 cases a day.
