Man held for shooting mother after video game argument

Friday afternoon at the home, a woman who identified herself at Matthew Nicholson's sister politely declined comment.

Matthew Nicholson of Ceres - a town about 96 miles east of San Francisco - was arrested Thursday night on suspicion of murder, the Modesto Bee reported.

"Had so much compassion for people and just wanted to see the best in people at all times", said Autumn Nicholson, the 68-year-old's daughter. Officers spotted the vehicle and arrested Nicholson without incident.

Nicholson then blamed her for the broken headset and threatened to kill the victim and Nicholson's father. During the argument, Nicholson broke his own headset while yelling at his mother, according to police.

A family friend told Fox40, "I understand that he would've killed the father too, but the gun jammed".

Sgt. Greg Yotsuya of the Ceres Police Dept. said, "He came out yelling something about "my headset is broken" or something about the headset being broken, and then grabbed a gun and started shooting".

Police confirmed Friday afternoon that the victim, Matthew Nicholson's mother, was Lydia Susanne Nicholson, 68, and that his father is Loren Nicholson, 81. "The father grabbed the gun, emptied it".

Loren had been with Lydia for 32 years, according to Fox 40.

Lydia Nicholson was taken to the hospital where she died. Nicholson then drove to a family member's house before he was ultimately taken into custody while at a traffic stop.

He has been charged with homicide and is being held without bail at the Stanislaus County Jail.

"Was it the video game", the police spokesman wondered aloud to a local NBC station, "or was there something else going on?"
