Le Drian: Iran not Respecting UN Text on Ballistic Missiles

According to the foreign reports, the Europeans have stepped up pressure on Iran over such issues as they struggle to respond to US President Donald Trump's latest threat that he would pull Washington out of the nuclear deal if some "disastrous flaws" were not fixed.

"If Iran wants to return to the family of nations it must cooperate on these questions or else it will always rightly be suspected of wanting to develop nuclear weapons", Le Drian told Le Figaro.

"That is why.I shall go to Iran on March 5", said Le Drian, who will hold talks with his counterpart, Javad Zarif.

Senior Iranian officials have repeatedly said that the country's missile program is purely defensive, stressing that it is not up to France or any other country to make decisions about its ballistic missile program. "We have not had any negotiations about our missile and defense capabilities and will not talk about these issues with others", Bahram Qasemi was quoted as saying by Tasnim news agency on Monday. "We should surely discuss Iran's influence in the region because it has been a positive one and everyone has benefited from it".

If it wasn't for Iran's influence and the role it played in the region, the bloodthirsty terrorists would have captured Damascus and Baghdad, conducing acts of terror in the heart of Europe, Qassemi stressed.

Last month, Tehran advised Paris to be careful in its views about the Islamic Republic after French President Emmanuel Macron called for talks on Iran's ballistic missiles.

Adding urgency to Le Drian's visit is a four-month United States ultimatum to remedy a 2015 nuclear deal which curbed Iran's nuclear ambitions in return for the relaxing of punishing sanctions. The German government appealed to Tehran to join European powers and the United States in discussions, citing concerns about its missile programme and regional activities. "There's a lot to discuss, and we are now tackling that", she said.

The EU, which has staunchly defended the deal as the best way to thwart Iran's nuclear ambitions, is working on a response with France, Britain and Germany - the three European signatories. Juergen Hardt, foreign policy spokesman for Chancellor Angela Merkel's conservatives in parliament, dismissed the report as "speculation" and said new sanctions could prompt Tehran to stop implementing the nuclear deal. "But there is no European consensus yet".
