Korea proposes talks on Games with Pyongyang

North Korea's state-run media have been hitting the "one Korean nation" theme hard since leader Kim Jong Un struck a surprisingly conciliatory tone toward Seoul in his New Year's address.

'I probably have a very good relationship with Kim Jong Un, ' Trump said 'I have relationships with people. "I think you people are surprised", said the US President.

"I like it very much what I'm seeing".

The North made the appeal on Friday in a commentary published on the website of the Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of Korea, the liaison body with South Korea.

But the analysis of satellite images suggests that although the North Portal of the site - where the last five nuclear tests were conducted - remains "dormant", tunnel excavation in the West Portal has been "stepped up". The South and the United States are technically still at war with the North because the 1950-53 Korean War ended with a truce, not a peace treaty.

The North, however, has refused to do so, arguing that its development of nuclear weapons and intercontinental ballistic missiles is necessary to deter a potential attack by the U.S. "That should have been a problem that was solved by Obama, or Bush, or Clinton or anybody, because the longer it went, the worse, the more hard the problem got", he said.

And to tell us more about what we can expect from Seoul and Washington from here on out in regards to the North's participation in the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics as well as future talks involving the two sides, Woo Jung-yeop, research fellow at the Sejong Institute joins us in the studio today.

But South Korea's presidential office also said Trump told Moon to let North Korea understand that there will be no military action of any kind while the two Koreas continue to hold dialogue, the Yonhap news agency reported.

There was no immediate response from North Korea to the proposals.

The Kremlin strongman congratulated the North Korean dictator, saying he had won the latest stand-off with the US and South Korea. The belief of Soviet leaders that Reagan might just be insane enough to push the nuclear button constrained Soviet behavior and helped make possible a peaceful end to the Cold War. The call also came a few days after Seoul and Washington agreed to delay their annual military manoeuvers until after the Pyeongchang Winter Olympic Games in February, a decision which has led to this moment of rapprochement between the two Koreas. They love to point out that his chief of staff, Im Jong-Seok, served more than three years in prison for arranging the visit of the leftist heroine Lim Su-Kyung to a youth festival in Pyongyang in 1989 in defiance of the national security law.

"It would be a big help to make PyeongChang Olympics a peace Olympics and guarantee its success if you express your intention to delay the ROK-U.S. joint military drills during the period of PyeongChang Winter Olympics", the Blue House quoted South Korean President Moon Jae-in as having said during the call. There may be signs of a thaw on the Korean peninsula but thaw in the frozen relations between the United States and North Korea are nowhere on the horizon.
