Justice Dept. Suspected Carter Page Acted as Russian Agent

The renewal shows that the Justice Department under President Trump saw reason to believe that the associate, Carter Page, was acting as a Russian agent. In a letter last May, Page asked Rosenstein, a former US attorney in Baltimore, to provide documents that were used for the surveillance warrant.

Page told Politico he has filed a freedom of information act request to the DOJ inquiring about Federal Bureau of Investigation surveillance of him.

The controversial memo authored by Rep. Devin Nunes alleges that Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein extended a surveillance warrant for a prominent associate of President Donald Trump based on unverified research by the author of the Trump-Russia dossier.

The development might signal that Rosenstein could face renewed criticism from within his own party, including from the White House.

Rosenstein approved the continued surveillance of a Trump associate a year ago, according to a report released Monday that once again thrust the former U.S. Attorney for Maryland into the spotlight.

Assistant Attorney General Stephen Boyd has said the memo draws on classified information and it would be "extraordinarily reckless" to release it.

And the applications to obtain and renew the warrant from the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court are even more closely held.

The Republican memo and a Democratic memo responding to it both remain highly secret, and it is unclear if any of the Republican complaints about Rosenstein or the Justice Department carry weight.

The Justice Department has not replied to Page's letter, he told TheDC.

He also faced pressure from Democrats after crafting a memo the White House initially used to justify the firing of former FBI James Comey.

To obtain the warrant involving Page, the government needed to show probable cause that he was acting as an agent of Russian Federation.

The memo in question was authored by Rep. Devin Nunes' (R-CA) staffers, and it reportedly contains classified information about the conduct of senior Department of Justice and Federal Bureau of Investigation officials, that allegedly proves Republicans' claims of the Justice Department's bias against President Donald Trump.

It's not clear if a surveillance court judge approved the DOJ's request to extend the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) warrant.
