JBL joins the Google Smart Display platform with the JBL Link View

Considering that Amazon is now leading in the category of smart home appliances, Google has taken drastic measures to prevent Alexa from moving forward.

While Alexa is yet to be offered in Australia, it is coming in the first quarter of this year. While the company did not launch any major new products, the company did announce its intention to jump onto the smart speakers and voice assistant bandwagon.

An assortment of speakers and sound bars naturally showed off Alexa integration, but so did desktops, laptops, phones, routers, TVs, cars, headphones, washers, dryers, refrigerators, light switches, smoke alarms, toilets, and even exhaust vents. Google is looking to nab more of that real estate as well. LG is playing both sides, in fact.

"We'll have to see how that works out", Google's Scott Huffman, a Google VP, said. Along with these devices also a list "smart displays" were displayed. On Tuesday, the search giant had a few announcements to make which included its plans to expand Assistant this year and a new product called Google Pay.

The displays respond to "Hey Google" and they do things that are expected from a digital assistant. It is estimated Google Home will capture 25 percent of the smart speaker market in 2018, while Amazon's Echo will command a 68 percent. However, we'll have to give a device from JBL, Lenovo, LG or Sony a try if we want them any sooner than that. But it has taken up a decent approach over it's "touch screen speaker". Microsoft's Cortana digital assistant is installed by default on Windows 10 computers. JBL comes in second, with their Link View Smart Display. On the flip side, you better sit back to see the biggest trend - or, put another way, whatever was overkill this particular year. The latter has its own assistant in the form of Bixby, whose (or should that be its) abilities are to be extended and made more widely available with the announced release of a SmartThings app to appear mid-2018.
