It's snowing in Tallahassee, Fla. for the first time in three decades

The last time a wintery blast hit Tallahassee with any measurable snowfall was December 22-23, 1989, when an inch fell.

Schools have closed in several northern Florida districts, while students across much of the area remain out on winter break. Parts of the state, from Tallahassee to Jacksonville, are expected to get at most half an inch of what will be a mix of sleep and snow, according to NBC meteorologist Sherri Pugh.

It is expected to be even colder in Central Florida on Thursday. "That's why it's so rare".

Parts of Florida got a dose of winter weather on Wednesday morning when Mother Nature brought snow and ice to the Sunshine State. So the snow "started sticking right away".

In Raleigh, North Carolina, hardware stores reported brisk sales of ice-melting compounds, pipe insulation and sleds as an inch (2.5 centimeters) of snow was forecast.

Tallahassee police tweeted a video of snow falling in the area, but cautioned drivers who were about to hit the icy roads.

But the sun has already come out there and temperatures have risen above freezing, so "it's already melting away", he said.

Snow, sleet and freezing rain fell across parts of North Florida Wednesday morning closing roads, schools, universities and colleges in North Florida and South Georgia.

The snow was then headed east.

While this is the first time Tallahassee has seen snow in almost 30 years, this isn't the first time Florida got frosty this winter.

Florida's capital woke up to snow and sleet on Wednesday, the first significant accumulation of frozen precipitation since 1989. That snow also came after a prolonged blast of Arctic air.

Although not all Tallahassee residents may have been excited by the chilly temperatures and snow, a handful of people (and furry friends) were thrilled by their usually sunny home being transformed into a winter wonderland.

Grayson was one of the heaviest one-day snowfalls on record in both Savannah, Georgia, and Charleston, South Carolina. State highway officials also closed parts of Interstate 10, between Capital Circle Southwest to Live Oak in Suwanee County, because of ice on the roadway.

Studies in recent years have shown some remarkable warming-related snow trends, though. Check out the map, Blue-shaded areas could get snow.

As the cold pushed farther northward, Jerry Gorans found himself stunned by the frigid temperatures as he walked along the waterfront City Dock of Annapolis, Maryland, where birds stood still on icy water.

A 2014 study that looked at how warming might affect the biggest snows - the Snowpocalypses and Snowzillas - found that extreme snowfalls might account for a bigger proportion of all snows for a time. The snowfall lasted about one hour and quickly dissipated.
