Hundreds rush to get hepatitis a vaccines after 7-Eleven scare

Thousands of 7-Eleven customers who ate hot food or used the bathroom in one of the chain's stores may have contracted hepatitis A.

They say up to 2,000 customers who entered the store located at 2666 West 7800 South between December 26 and January 3 may have been exposed. In addition, if you consumed these items: fountain drink or other self-serve beverage, fresh fruit, or any item from the store's hot food case, such as pizza, hot dogs, chicken wings, or taquitos is at risk.

Prepackaged items bought at the store are safe.

The possible exposure only affects the specific 7-Eleven branch in West Jordan, as an employee worked at the store while infected with hepatitis A. Customers who purchased and consumed only packaged food and bottled items from the store are not at risk of exposure.

Anxious regular Blaize Sanchez, who works next to the store, told Fox13: 'Today I had a hot dog over there, kind of spooky knowing that'.

The 7-Eleven in question has been "cooperating fully" with the health department's investigation, and since the possible exposure was discovered the store has been sanitized in accordance with health department recommendations.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), HAV is generally transmitted via person to person through consuming contaminated foods, drinking contaminated water, or via feces.

"This is an important reminder to food service establishments that they should consider vaccinating their food-handling employees against hepatitis A", said Salt Lake County Health Department executive director Gary Edwards in a statement.

Symptoms - which include nausea, vomiting, fever and fatigue - can take 15 to 50 days to appear.

Health officials in Utah are urging people to get vaccinated after up to 2,000 customers at a 7-Eleven convenience store could've been exposed to hepatitis A.

"It's also important the food handlers be conscientious with hygiene, hand washing and not working when ill - and that managers be vigilant in enforcing those important requirements that protect public health".

The statement added that all employees at that location had received a hepatitis A vaccine from the Salt Lake County Health Department.
