Heat Guard Dion Waiters to Have Season-Ending Ankle Surgery

He hasn't played since and has missed eight consecutive games. He considered surgery last summer but instead elected to do arduous rehab and treatment, in part because he was a free agent.

Waiters has missed the past seven games for the Heat after injuring his ankle against the Dallas Mavericks on December 22. Per Charania, he received multiple opinions on the ankle by doctors in Los Angeles before making the decision for surgery.

Waiters' production has dipped this season as he has played through pain in the ankle that he said was "excruciating" at times.

Waiters was adamant that he wasn't going to have surgery, according to a report from NBC Sports, saying "No, hell no", to the possibility of an operation.

The Heat, which has started Tyler Johnson at shooting guard in Waiters' place, are expected to get guard Rodney McGruder back from injury before the end of the season.

The fifth-year guard out of Syracuse was averaging 14.3 points, 3.8 assists and 2.6 rebounds on the season but was shooting a shade under 40% from the field. That should help soften the blow of Waiters' loss.
