Hawaii officials say missile alert was mistake

Officials quickly confirmed afterward that the alert was a false alarm and had been sent out by mistake.

A false emergency alert shocked the people of Hawaii on Saturday morning, with push alerts waking some up at 8 a.m. informing them that a ballistic missile was bound for the islands.

It was enough time to send people scrambling for shelter and their cars.

"It was a false alarm based on a human error", Schatz tweeted.

Tulsi Gabbard confirmed on Twitter that the alert was mistakenly sent out, and there was not threat of a missile. "Last fall, Hawaii started having drills, but no staff told us this". Repeating, the Warning Message received this morning DOES NOT DEPICT A REAL MISSILE THREAT.

"My phone's blowing up right now", Nawrocki added.

Rep. Gabbard told CNN that the alert was "inadvertent", according to a tweet by Jake Tapper. Brian Schatz (D-HI) "The whole state was terrified". "There needs to be tough and quick accountability and a fixed process". "I asked a managerial type near the lobby where we should go and he said we could all go to the banquet hall he was in".

But the alert was followed by statements from Hawaii officials that there were no incoming ballistic missiles.

"There is no missile threat", the Democratic senator tweeted.

NORAD spokesman Lt. Commander Joe Nawroo said that they were trying to establish how the serious command and control error was made.

Twitter users were in a frenzy as the situation unfolded.

The message was sent amid heightened nuclear tensions between the United States and North Korea.
