Has a 'severe' flu season reached its peak in Idaho? Maybe not

Of the cases reported the first week of the new year, county residents over the age of 65 had the highest number flu cases reported.

"In most years, a flu season lasts anywhere from six weeks to eight weeks to 10 weeks in any particular place, so we're not yet at peak, but we're hearing from hospitals across the state that many are full". You may also see these symptoms with a cold, but doctors said they are more flu related.

According to Summit County Public Health, there are no vaccine shortages in OH so there's still time to get a flu shot through your family doctor or at retail pharmacies such as CVS or Walgreens.

Health Minister John Haggie says a potentially less-than-perfect flu vaccine doesn't mean people should skip their flu vaccine this year.

Health officials in Dallas County are still recommending the flu shot for everyone over 6 months old.

The Tennessee Department of Health is seeing increased reports of flu cases and other respiratory illnesses across the state and is urging Tennesseans to take measures to slow the spread of the virus.

Dr Jernigan characterised the current flu season as "on the severe side", but said it does not appear to be as severe as the 2014/2015 flu season, which was also driven by an H3N2 virus.

He said one problem is thatthis year's flu vaccine may be only about 30 percent effective against the strain that is infecting most people.

Flu symptoms include fever, chills, cough, sore throat, congestion, body aches, headaches and severe fatigue. The flu can lead to complications like pneumonia, dehydration and worsening of chronic medical conditions. "Showing up with those influenza like illnesses". Symptoms may vary from person to person. "What we can see is a very rapid increase in the numbers of people coming in to see their healthcare providers", Dr Jernigan said.

Chen tells FOX 12 that in order to avoid overcrowding, patients should call their doctors as soon as they get flu-like symptoms.

Bad flu season in U.S.

Health officials say our area has suffered from Influenza type A, but they expect two more strands to make a presence here after students return from winter vacation. For the first time in 13 years - for as long as they have been monitoring flu activity in this particular way - this is the first time we have seen nearly the same activity across the country.
