Hard search goes on in California mudslides

Torrential rain triggered a series of catastrophic mudslides in the Montecito area of Santa Barbara on Tuesday morning, reducing buildings to rubble and killing at least 18 people.

On Friday, the sheriff's department issued a new mandatory evacuation order for an area of Montecito.

As rescuers searched Wednesday for more than a dozen people missing after mudslides swept away homes in Montecito, a San Diego-based task force and a strike team have been deployed to the area to assist with the efforts.

As their names and those of 14 other victims were released Thursday, crews kept digging through the muck and rubble looking for more people. Then, later Thursday, officials updated the number again, saying there were actually 43 people still unaccounted for.

A statement said: "The Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office is asking for the community's help in locating several missing persons related to the January 9, 2018 storm incident". "We're going to do what we do", she told DeGeneres.

"We're going to do what we do", Winfrey said. Her body was found that night, near a highway hit by the slide.

The victims' ages ranged from 3 to 89 and the cause of death for all was "multiple traumatic injuries due to flash flood with mudslides due to recent wildfire", according to the sheriff's office.

The number of people missing after the deadly mudslides in Montecito, California, has surged to 48.

"Floodwaters and mudslides destroyed 65 homes and damaged 462 other residences", spokeswoman Susan Klein-Rothschild said Thursday, according to CNN. In an Instagram post on the same day many Democrats were talking about her for president because of her rousing speech at the Golden Globes, she shared photos of the deep mud in her backyard and video of rescue helicopters hovering over her house.

ROTT: Anderson says those rescue efforts are expected to continue until everyone is found. "You have to start accepting the reality of that".

"Authorities had been bracing for the possibility of catastrophic flooding because of heavy rain in the forecast for the first time in 10 months".

"Mud came in an instant, like a dam breaking", Montecito resident Ben Hyatt told CNN. The local television news stations sent their youngest, prettiest, local reporters to stand in that mud for hours, reporting the most unimaginable sights of their young lives. Also, residents left homeless will require shelter. "I feel like I escaped". Tige said he was checking the downspouts of his home around 3:30 a.m. when the storm picked up.

"The only words I can really think of to describe what it looked like was it looked like a World War I battlefield", Brown said.
