Harassed by moral police, 20-year-old woman hangs self in Karnataka

One out of the five accused has been arrested while the other four are still absconding.

"She was harassed by these people for roaming around with a Muslim man, after which she chose to end her life", Annamalai said.

And while the woman mentioned the names of the five accused right wingers in her suicide note, the police on Tuesday arrested Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) District Yuva Morcha President, for abetting suicide.

Constant harassment and threats by pro-Hindu activists pushed a 20-year-old woman in Karnataka to kill herself for declaring that she "loved Muslims".

The victim identified as Dhanyashree.

The girl committed suicide by hanging herself around 10 pm and had written a suicide note accusing certain people of harassing her and creating issues of which she is not even a part of and tarnishing her reputation.

A photograph in which the girl was reportedly seen with a Muslim boy was circulated on social media platforms.

Chikkamagaluru district Superintendent of Police Annamalai K told reporters they received a complaint at the Mudigere Police station that the girl, Dhanyashree, had committed suicide.

According to media reports, Dhanyashree, a first-year student of B.Com, was hounded by youth activists affiliated with organisations such as the Bajrang Dal and the BJYM after she supposedly said on a WhatsApp group that she had a liking for people hailing from the Muslim community.

"A case has been registered under 306 (Abetment to suicide) of the IPC, the police officer added".

According to Suvarna, a group of men, who identified themselves as Bajrang Dal activists, visited their home the next day and threatened to defame her daughter.

The victim's phone was recovered by the police and they found that there was a photo of her with a boy of different community which was circulated along with messages.

Reportedly, the 20-year-old victim drew attention of the right wing groups in Karnataka after she started chatting with a friend to whom she had said, "I love Muslims". We are trying to find who had sent the photo to the girl and made a comment, which would have forced her to take this extreme strep.
