Grandparents who claimed pot was meant for Christmas gifts arrested again

Last month they were found with 60 pounds of marijuana the couple said was Christmas gifts.

They were pulled over for following another vehicle too closely, and after a police K9 smelled narcotics, their pickup truck was searched and a duffel bag with $18,000 in cash and notes consistent with marijuana sales was found.

The couple signed an abandonment form stating they don't claim the money as their own, Mayo said.

The Jirons told police they were unaware it was illegal to transport marijuana through Nebraska and they were planning to give the drug as Christmas presents.

The elderly parents of a Vermont prosecutor caught in a massive drug bust before Christmas have been arrested again. Deputies found 60 pounds of marijuana in boxes in the pickup truck's topper.

Patrick and Barbara Jiron's son, Justin Jiron, is a deputy state attorney in Chittenden County, Vermont.

Deputies reported smelling "the odor of raw marijuana coming from the vehicle", reported.

On Dec. 19, 2017, the Jirons were stopped in nearby York County with some $300,000 worth of marijuana.

County Judge John Freudenberg ordered Barbara Jiron to return to court on February 1 on the drug money charge after appointing an attorney for her.

The two were detained and booked at the Lancaster County Jail for possession of money "used or meant to be used to facilitate a violation" of laws against controlled substances. A hearing for Barbara Jiron in York County was postponed until January 17, when her husband also is scheduled to appear. Authorities told the York News-Times they found almost 60 pounds of marijuana, worth an estimated $336,000, after making a traffic stop December 19 on Interstate 80 near Bradshaw.

Wednesday in court the Jirons of California heard new charges after their Tuesday morning arrest.

In York County, both were charged with possession of marijuana with the intent to deliver and having no drug tax stamp. Their 42-year-old daughter, a resident of Vermont, was driving the vehicle, but was not arrested.

At that time, the couple was driving on I-80 about 50 miles west of Lincoln in York County, Neb.
