Gore Verbinski Has Left Channing Tatum's Gambit Movie

Gore Verbinski Has Left Channing Tatum's Gambit Movie

According to Deadline, director Gore Verbinski (A Cure for Wellness) has left the director's chair of Gambit due to "scheduling issues", and the site claims the split was amicable all around. In late 2017, Pirates of the Caribbean director Gore Verbinski agreed to take over the film, and a February 2019 release date was set by FOX.

The movie also stars Lizzy Caplan as Bella Donna Boudreaux, Gambit's first love and the daughter of New Orleans' Assassins' Guild in the comics.

Wyatt was replaced in November by Doug Liman, but he would go on to leave the project in August 2016. Updated with Gambit's new release date. With things gearing up to head into production shortly, it seemed like the project was finally - finally! - about to get off the ground. It's been a passion project for the actor, who has always been attached and appeared as a surprise guest at Fox's X-Men panel at San Diego Comic-Con back in 2015. Well, for New Mutants, The Wrap has reported that while the test screening for the new film was decently enough received, it did not meet studio expectations of how scary it should be. Channing Tatum remains aboard as the lead role.

Gambit, as you know, is a long-gestating X-Men spin-off to be centered around - you guessed it - Gambit, the staff-carrying, card-throwing mutant with a sassy cajun accent. There's no word on whether or not this most-recent setback will affect the movie's previously announced release date of February 14, 2019.

Budget details for the film were unavailable, although its original 2015 filing with the state film office indicated at the time that it was operating with a $155 million budget.
