Google Assistant is coming to headphones from JBL, LG, and Sony

There's no announcement on global expansion of the Assistant for Android Auto as yet, but it shouldn't be too far away once Google gets some solid install info from the USA users.

The update to Google Assistant in Android Auto also brings tighter integration with the vehicle systems, with Google saying that cars from BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Hyundai, Kia and Fiat Chrysler will also let you check your fuel level, lock doors, and more.

A new app directory wasn't the only Google Assistant news this week.

Google also appears to be doubling down on "Hey Google" as a call sign for the Assistant; in briefings given to Android Central throughout the week, representatives from Google and other companies demoing products didn't use "OK Google" at all, and actively encouraged us to start using the less formal greeting going forward.

With Google Assistant heading a breath-taking number of devices this year, the search giant is highlighting another key strength: This technology now supports over one million actions, which are essentially things the Assistant can do. And soon, you'll be able to reserve a parking space with SpotHero or order your favorite handcrafted drink or food from Starbucks-all from the road. They say it is now available on more than 400 million devices.

Right now, drivers are expected to pair their phones to their cars to activate the Assistant, but that may not be the case forever. Actions include features built by Google-like directions on Google Maps-and those that come from developers, publishers and other third parties, like working out with Fitbit Coach. And to make talking about them a bit easier, Google is also now calling its first-party actions... wait for it... So finding photos with Google Photos would be one Action while meditating with Headspace would be another. Seasoned users can also benefit from it as it lets them fine-tune their experience by allowing them to explore more commands.

That's our news for the day. If last year's CES was the year of Alexa, Google Assistant is dominating the conversation in 2018.
