Ford Ranger debuts in Detroit

After putting its F-Series Jr. on hiatus amid slowing sales in 2011, Ford is reentering the revived small pickup segment with a new truck based on one it's been offering overseas in the years since. With a recent resurge in popularity for compact pickup trucks such as the Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon, the Toyota Tacoma and the Honda Ridgeline, there's at last room again for a baby Ford truck.

An global version of the Ranger was actually born in 2009, before the previous model breathed its last breathe.

The Ford Ranger has been launched in the USA to satisfy burgeoning demand in the mid-size pick-up truck market.

Turns out seven years was as long as Ford could go without trying to assert its truck leadership image in every possible sub-segment, and get the Ranger back on the USA market. Ford designed the new model on the platform used in global production.

"Ranger has always held a special place in the hearts of truck fans", said Hau Thai-Tang, Ford executive vice president of product development and purchasing. "The all-new Ranger is designed for today's midsize truck buyer, delivering even more utility, capability and technology for those who blend city living with more off-the-grid adventures on weekends".

The company said at last year's North American International Auto Show that there's enormous consumer demand for the truck.

Announced at the Detroit motor show, the Nissan Navara and Volkswagen Amarok rival enters a class that has grown by 83% since 2014 in the US.

Analysts have said Ford might cut into F-150 sales by releasing the Ranger in the US, but Ford executives have said F-150 shoppers are typically completely different from those who'd look to buy a Ranger. Marketing-speak translation: Ford wants buyers willing to splurge on the Ranger because they think it's cool, even if they in no way need a pickup truck. It will include FX Off-Road packages, and in SuperCab or SuperCrew cab configurations, the automaker has said. Mud/ruts carries with it the throttle numbing, while also throwing the drivetrain into 4-Hi for truck stuff. It consists of Ford's turbocharged, 2.3-liter EcoBoost petrol engine - with a forged crankshaft and forged connecting rods for durability - paired with Ford's proven 10-speed automatic transmission. The tailgate, front fenders, and hood are all aluminum, in keeping with one of the F-Series major brand identifiers. The truck was designed with an athletic look in mind, which truck buyers favor.

In addition to the Terrain Management tech, a system Ford calls Trail Control will debut on Rangers outfitted with the FX4 Off-Road package. The FX4 Off-Road Package provides additional trail capability with off-road-tuned shocks, all-terrain tires, a frame-mounted heavy-gauge steel front bash plate, frame-mounted skid plates and FX4 badging. That trim also comes with a terrain management system similar to that found in the F-150 Raptor. XLT and Lariat models will get active lane control, lane departure warning, rear park assist, and blind-spot monitors that also cover the trailer the Ranger might be towing. There are numerous optional driver-assist features, too. FordPass Connect will give the Ranger Wi-Fi hotspot capabilities, ensuring that new adventurous owners can post their adventurous lifestyles to their favorite social media outlets, making the rest of our life feel uninteresting and void of Ranger-worthy adventure.

Inside, the 2019 Ranger features an 8-inch touch screen for the available SYNC 3 system, while the instrument cluster features dual LCD productivity screens for real-time vehicle, navigation and audio information.

The new Ranger will start arriving in North American dealerships in early 2019 and be assembled at its Wayne, Michigan, factory in suburban Detroit. This year, it will replace the Focus and the C-Max there.

Yes, a unique powertrain; for now, at least, the North American 2019 Ford Ranger will be available with just a single engine and transmission combination, although it's a rather promising one.
