Drew Brees comes to pass when New Orleans Saints need him

Carolina (11-6) almost prevented New Orleans from staying alive in the postseason, turning a late interception of quarterback Drew Brees into a last-ditch effort to steal a victory on the road after twice losing to the Saints in the regular season.

In what might be the most evenly matched game of Wild Card weekend, the No. 4 New Orleans Saints (11-5) will host the No. 5 Carolina Panthers (11-5) on the last game of the slate.

New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees (9) passes in the first half of an NFL football game against the Carolina Panthers in New Orleans, Sunday, Jan. 7, 2018. He later sported a broom in the New Orleans locker room, representing the Saints' three-game sweep of Carolina this season.

Olsen had eight catches for 107 yards and a touchdown.

"I wish we could bring like 10 fans right in the middle of the field and have them hear what happens", Payton said of the lift their noise gives his team. "You still have to have a level of patience and take advantage of them when they do come around".

"I thought the quarterback was out of the pocket". The Saints had only 41 rushing yards. He only got one carry in the game, from the Panthers' goal line with 46 seconds remaining in the first half.

Brees couldn't immediately find an open receiver. Despite these less-than-stellar receivers, Newton threw for 349 yards and two touchdowns, of which tight end Greg Olsen and running back Christian McCaffrey accounted for 208 yards and two touchdowns. That pulled the Panthers to within 24-19.

Newton would get back up and start walking off the field, but before he reached the sideline he fell to the turf and appeared to be out of it.

However, Brees had done enough to push the Saints forward.

With 24 seconds left, Newton threw incomplete for Funchess in the end zone, and on fourth down, safety Vonn Bell iced the game by blitzing up the middle and tackling Newtown for a 17-yard loss. "It would be nice to have the explanation". And pay no mind to those who say it's hard to defeat a team three times in one season (it's factually inaccurate).

Bush led the Saints onto the field wearing a No. 91 jersey to honor late New Orleans great Will Smith, who was killed during a road rage incident in 2016.

The Saints lost starting left guard Andreas Peat with a leg injury in the second quarter and his teammates rallied in his absence. But they gave a spirited, cohesive effort. "When you do that, you put yourself in a very scary position".

Since Jake McQuaide played long snapper for the Rams in their 26-13 defeat at the hands of the Falcons, the only game which did not feature a former Buckeye was the Titans 22-21 victory over the Chiefs.

"We've been playing together for a while now, so we kind of know the strengths and the weaknesses of the guys. We knew coming in this would be completely different".

"Both teams ended the season 11-5, but while Carolina's Cam Newton - at 28 years old - still has plenty of years ahead of him, time might be running out on New Orleans" Drew Brees. "You nearly let them back in the game".
